How to Clean a Baby's Mouth and Teeth?

Establishing good oral and dental hygiene habits at an early age is crucial. Inadequate and improper dental care in infants can lead to infections and other dental problems. Adana Private Dentrum Oral and Dental Health Clinic has explained the importance of oral and dental hygiene in babies for you.

When Should Dental Care Begin in Babies?

Baby teeth usually begin to erupt when babies are 4-7 months old. The first teeth to appear in babies are the two front teeth in the lower jaw. By the time a child is 3 years old, they will have approximately 20 baby teeth.

Children's baby teeth begin to fall out at age 6. During the teething process, some children may need orthodontics, such as braces. Regular dental check-ups are important for children during this period.

Oral care shouldn't wait for the first teeth to erupt; gently clean your gums with a damp cloth. Using teething rings, as recommended by your doctor, and gently massaging the gums is also essential for oral hygiene.

How should babies' teeth be cared for?

Dental care in babies should be done with soft-bristled brushes and water. Using drinking water is healthier for tooth enamel. Between the ages of 1-2 years, teeth should be cleaned with a soft brush and water without toothpaste.

Children should start using toothpaste suitable for children at the age of 2. A fluoride-free toothpaste should be chosen. Once the child gets used to using toothpaste and is able to spit it out without swallowing, then switch to fluoride toothpaste. The size of the toothpaste tube should not exceed the size of a pea.

Until the age of 5-6, children should brush their teeth under parental supervision using an appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste.
